Empowering Diverse Futures in STEM: Join the WCDC LEGO Robotics Open House

At the Westchester Child Development Center (WCDC), we believe that the future of innovation depends on the inclusion of every voice, background, and perspective. We are excited to invite families, educators, and young innovators to our upcoming LEGO Open House on Saturday, June 20, from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM.

This event is a hands-on introduction to our inclusive STEM and engineering programs, designed to inspire the next generation of problem-solvers in a supportive and empowering environment.

Bridging the Representation Gap in STEM

WCDC is deeply committed to building equitable educational pathways. Currently, the national STEM workforce does not reflect the diversity of our communities. Women make up approximately 35% of the STEM workforce, while Black and Hispanic workers account for roughly 9% and 15% of STEM jobs, respectively.

To dismantle these historical barriers, WCDC provides culturally responsive and accessible STEM programming. We intentionally cultivate an environment where children of all racial groups, gender identities, and socioeconomic backgrounds can confidently explore technology, robotics, and engineering. By embedding the FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) core values—teamwork, discovery, impact, inclusion, innovation, and fun—into our curriculum, we ensure every student feels valued and capable.

Event Highlight: Demonstrations by Tidal Engineer & FireFox

A major feature of our Open House will be exclusive live demonstrations by two of our premier robotics teams: Tidal Engineer and FireFox.

Following their incredible advancement to the national competitions from the New York State LEGO championships this past February, these young innovators will showcase the real-world application of the skills taught in our programs.

Attendees will get an up-close look at:

  • Robot Performance & Engineering: Live demonstrations of autonomous robots built using LEGO SPIKE Prime, showcasing precision movement, motorized mechanisms, and advanced coding.

  • Innovation Project Presentations: The teams will present their research, solution designs, and prototypes, demonstrating how technical depth pairs with public speaking and storytelling.

  • Peer-to-Peer Inspiration: Youth attendees will have the chance to interact directly with the members of Tidal Engineer and FireFox, proving that exceptional engineering achievements are within their reach.

Discover the WCDC LEGO Learning Pathway

During the Open House, families can explore our scaffolded robotics programs designed for different age groups:

  • LEGO Explore (Grades K-2): Nurtures early curiosity through hands-on building, basic engineering concepts, and simple machine mechanisms. Students develop spatial reasoning and collaboration skills while playing with motorized kits.

  • LEGO Challenge (Grades 3-5): Introduces advanced robotics, mechanical engineering, and Python/Pybricks coding. Students build autonomous robots and prepare for collaborative FLL competitions.
