If you're searching for a high-quality close reading class for elementary students, Westchester families now have an exciting new option. At Westchester Child Development Center (WCDC), we are launching a structured online Close Reading Program for Grades 1–5, designed to strengthen reading comprehension, critical thinking, and literary analysis through beloved classic books.
This program aligns with WCDC’s mission of combining academic rigor with engaging, student-centered learning —making reading both meaningful and enjoyable.
What Is Close Reading—and Why Does It Matter?
Close reading is more than just reading a story. It teaches students to:
Analyze characters, themes, and vocabulary
Ask deeper questions about the text
Support ideas with evidence
Develop critical thinking and discussion skills
These are essential skills for academic success in English Language Arts (ELA) and beyond.
Grade-Level Book Selection
Each grade is paired with a carefully chosen classic novel, ensuring the right balance of challenge and engagement:
🐧 1st Grade

Focus: Story sequencing, vocabulary building, and character understanding
🐺 2nd Grade
